alb3666228 Book of the Dead for the Singer of Amun, Nany. Dimensions: L. 521.5 cm (206 5/16 in); H. 35 cm (13 3/4 in). Dynasty: Dynasty 21. Reign: reign of Psusennes I-II. Date: ca. 1050 B.C..Archaeologists found this papyrus in the burial of Nany, a woman in her seventies. She was a singer of the god Amun-Re. Nany also had the title "king's daughter," which probably means that she was a child of the high priest of Amun and titular king, Painedjem I. As was customary during the Third Intermediate Period, Nany's coffins (30.3.23-.25) and boxes of shabtis (30.3.26-.30) were accompanied by a hollow wooden Osiris figure, which contained a papyrus scroll inscribed with a collection of texts called the "Book of Coming Forth by Day" - better known to us as the Book of the Dead. When unrolled, this scroll is more than seventeen feet long. The scene depicted here shows the climax of the journey to the afterlife. Nany is in the Hall of Judgment. Holding her mouth and eyes in her hand, she stands to the left of a large scale. Her heart is being weighed against Maat, the goddess of justice and truth, who is represented as a tiny figure wearing her symbol, a single large feather, in her headband. On the right, Osiris, god of the underworld and rebirth, presides over the scene. He wears the white crown of Upper Egypt and the curving beard of a god. His body is wrapped like a mummy except for his hands, which clasp a crook. On the table before him is an offering of a joint of beef. Canine-headed Anubis, overseer of mummification, adjusts the scales, while a baboon—symbolizing Thoth, the god of wisdom and writing—sits on the balance beam and prepares to write down the result. Behind Nany stands the goddess Isis, both wife and sister of Osiris. She is identified by the hieroglyph above her head.In this scene, Nany has been found truthful and therefore worthy of entering the afterlife. Anubis says to Osiris, "Her heart is an accurate witness, "and Osiris replies," Give her her eyes and her mouth, since her heart is an accurate witness." In the horizontal register above the judgment scene, Nany appears in three episodes: worshipping the divine palette with which all is written, praising a statue of Horus in his falcon form, and standing by her own tomb. alb3603953 Yuny and His Wife Renenutet. Dimensions: H. 84.5 cm (33 1/4 in); w. 54.5 cm (21 7/16 in); d. 73 cm (28 3/4 in). Dynasty: Dynasty 19. Reign: reign of Seti I. Date: ca. 1294-1279 B.C..These figures represent Yuny seated next to his wife Renenutet. Yuny, who lived in the city of Asyut, was a chief royal scribe and holder of many other offices, perhaps including that of physician. Additional inscriptions on the base of the statue further elaborate Yuny's responsibilities. On the center fold of Yuny's pleated skirt is an inscription that reads: "May everything that comes forth upon the offering table of [the god] . and all pure food that comes forth from the Great Enclosure [the temple complex at Heliopolis] be for the chief scribe, royal scribe of letters, Yuny, justified."Renenutet affectionately places her right arm around her husband's shoulders. On the back of the statue she is described as a singer of Amun-Re. In her left hand, she holds by its metal counterweight a heavy bead necklace called a menat. Menat necklaces were ritual implements that were held in the hands and shaken like cymbals, especially in the service of the goddess Hathor, but also when entering the presence of other deities..Appropriate to their high secular and religious positions, Yuny and Renenutet wear the elaborate wigs and fine linen attire fashionable in their time. Renenutet is adorned with a lotus fillet and a necklace called a broad collar. The beads are in the shape of nefer hieroglyphs (meaning "good" or "beautiful"), offering vases, and floral petals. Traces of black remain on the wigs. The couple sit together on a bench with elegantly carved lion-paw feet.On the back of the chair in both sunken and raised relief are two scenes illustrating the ancient Egyptian ideal of affection and remembrance among family generations. In the upper register, Yuny and Renenutet receive offerings from their son; in the lower, Renenutet offers food and drink to her parents.Another statue depicting Yuny by himself is on display in gallery 130. Date: ca. 1981-1975 B.C..This broad collar is one of the finest examples of its type from the early Middle Kingdom. It was carefully designed using beads of diminishing lengths to create the curved form. Although a few areas needed reinforcing with modern thread, the stringing is almost entirely original. Known as a wesekh in ancient Egyptian, this type of necklace adorns statues (30.8.57, 30.8.3), coffins (30.3.7, 25.3.182), and participants in banquet and offering scenes (13.183.3, 12.184, 28.3.35) from the Old Kingdom on. The collar is part of a set of funerary jewelry belonging to Wah, the estate manager of Meketre.Wah's broad collar (40.3.2), anklets and bracelets (40.3.3-40.3.10) were made as funerary ornaments for the burial and were found in the layers of linen wrapping that were closest to the body; the collar had been tied around the neck, and the bracelets and anklets had been laid over the lower arms and legs. They are all made of a ceramic material called Egyptian faience. Beaded jewelry sets of this type are illustrated in the object friezes that decorate many Middle Kingdom coffins, and fragmentary examples have been found in numerous tombs of the period. alb3642385 Relief depicting rituals and sacred emblems. Dimensions: 26.3.353a: H. 67.5 x W. 102 cm (26 9/16 x 40 3/16 in.)26.3.353b: H. 53.5 x W. 88.5 cm (21 1/16 x 34 13/16 in.). Dynasty: Dynasty 11. Reign: reign of Mentuhotep II, early. Date: ca. 2051-2030 B.C..Neferu was most likely the first queen of Nebhepetre Mentuhotep II, and may also have been his sister. Her plundered tomb, excavated by the Metropolitan Museum of Art between 1923 and 1931, lay outside the king's temple precinct at Deir el Bahri. It was visited as a shrine in the Eighteenth Dynasty, and at some point it was used as a quarry for the fine limestone covering the walls. The decoration of the funerary apartments consisted almost exclusively of ritual scenes and depictions of sacred objects deriving from local Upper Egyptian iconography. The carving of Neferu's surviving reliefs has a captivating otherworldliness, although it is varied in quality. The extenuated proportions of the figures, and the elaborate patterns contrasting with smooth planes, represent the height of the Eleventh Dynasty archaic style. The background was left unpainted, while the figures were either detailed or covered with orange, pink, purple, blue, green, white or black paint. This goal of the scenes illustrated in this group of fragments was to provide a liturgical listing of items that were essential in the proper procedure of funeral rites, rather than to depict actual ritual performances. This accounts for the striking lack of proportion between objects and human figures in these scenesThe following stages in the funeral rites are alluded to by the presence of sacred objects:1. The body of the deceased is prepared. In the top register on the left, four tiny men carry a rectangular object that looks like a canopy but is actually a bracelet (or anklet) that is to be put on the mummy.2. Entry into the underworld.Immediately to the right of the bracelet carriers, a kneeling man lifts up a funerary boat. Boats were thought to be the means by which the deceased entered the realm of the dead.3. The deceased is endowed with supernatural powers. In the middle register, two kneeling men present scepters, possibly to endow the deceased with divine power.4. The deceased is purified.Only the top of the lowest register is preserved. According to parallels (see gallery 107), at right we are seeing the cone-shaped lid of a jar around which flowers have been wrapped, followed by the top of a flail and a mythical double bull. The combination appears to be connected to rites of purification.5. The deceased follows the journey of the sun from dusk to dawn, from death to resurrection. The double bull is a symbol for the setting and rising sun, and the journey through the deep that the sun undergoes between the two points. For other reliefs from the tomb of Neferu, see 31.3.1 and 26.3.353*.
